Family cottage

If you're travelling with your family or a large group of friends there are a few things to consider when booking your family or group cottage to ensure the holiday runs smoothly and you're all comfortable in your chosen accommodation...

  • Guest numbers - Some companies have strict rules regarding the maximum occupancy levels per accommodation, so if you're planning to sneak in a few extra guests, check that there's room first.

  • Bedrooms - Property descriptions will show the 'ideal' number that a property will sleep i.e. sleeps 4 people, sleeps 6 people etc.  However, if the occupancy is shown as 4-6 people, it generally means the house comfortably sleeps four people with two other people sleeping on a camp bed etc. Check the cottage or holiday home details thoroughly for the number of bedrooms available and whether they are twin, double, single or bunk bedrooms. Check whether some people will be sleeping on sofa beds in the lounge if you fill the cottage to capacity. If this is the case, you may wish to choose a cottage that sleeps more people than you need to ensure that everyone has a proper bed.

  • Bathrooms - If a large group of you are staying together, think about how many bathrooms and toilets there are - you don't want to be queuing for the shower every morning! Also, if some rooms have en-suites, decide who gets these before you arrive - to avoid any arguments!

  • Communal Areas - The lounge, kitchen and bathrooms are the main areas you'll be sharing.  Therefore, especially if holidaying with a large group, try to find out how big the rooms are - is the lounge large enough for you all to relax in the evening? Also, are there enough sun loungers in the garden for everyone?

  • Babies & Toddlers - Check what amenities your accommodation includes, especially if you need a cot or a highchair.  Some companies will include these at no extra cost, other companies will charge whilst others will require you to take your own.

  • Book in Advance - One of the most important things when booking a holiday with your family or a group of friends is to make sure you choose somewhere you're all happy with on dates that suit everyone.  Therefore, book as far in advance as you can and remember -  the school holiday periods tend to book up quickly!
